What are we doing to help the planet?

At Areti, we’re concerned with finding ideal tech roles for the right candidates, but we also want to ensure we’re going about this in the right manner. All human activities have an impact on the planet, and that includes recruitment. We want to make sure that our endeavours not only do not harm the planet, but that they actually benefit it.

To make that goal a reality, we’ve partnered with Ecologi, a well-known carbon offsetting organisation. With their help, we can make sure that our activities have a net-positive impact on the planet.

Who are Ecologi?

One of the frustrations that many ordinary people feel in their day-to-day lives is the inability to have an impact on the fight to save our planet. Most people are at least somewhat aware of the difficulties facing the globe – and the role that humanity has played in creating those circumstances.

Unfortunately, a majority of these people feel unable to influence the situation. It was out of these feelings that Ecologi was born. Created by founder Elliot Coad and a group of environmentalists in Bristol, Ecologi has given people the agency they need to fight back against climate change.

How does it work?

Ecologi uses carbon offsetting processes to reduce or eliminate the impact that our activities have on the environment. This is done by participating in programmes that reduce the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Some examples of carbon offsetting schemes include:

  • Tree planting projects

You might be aware that trees take carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. Tree planting projects result in a net reduction of CO2 in a sustainable, long-term manner. To date, Ecologi is responsible for planting over 42 million trees. This is probably the most popular form of carbon sequestration.

  • Renewable energy investment

One of the primary causes of greenhouse gas emission is the use of fossil fuels. Coal, natural gas, and oil all contribute to the greenhouse effect. By investing in renewable energy sources – such as wind, solar, and hydroelectric power – we can reduce our reliance on unsustainable fuels.

  • Energy efficiency solutions

Another approach to reducing carbon emissions is improving energy efficiency. By reducing the need for energy, we limit the amount of CO2 that enters the atmosphere. One example of this would be the installation of comprehensive insulation, allowing buildings to have more effective temperature regulation and reducing the need for heating use.

Of course, these are just a few examples of carbon offsetting, and the fine work that organisations like Ecologi carry out.

Partnering with Ecologi

Areti is determined to act as a responsible and sustainable organisation. Our chief focus is ensuring that our activities do not cause untold harm to the environment. We will do our part in safeguarding the planet by making sure sustainability drives our business decisions.

Our partnership with Ecologi is key to this.

We will contribute to various causes in order to offset our carbon production. Up until now, we have mainly been focused on planting trees. For every successful placement, we are pledging to plant 100 trees. As of today, we’re already responsible for planting over 2000 trees through Ecologi. It goes without saying that we expect those numbers to rise exponentially.

The carbon offsetting impact of planting trees depends on many factors, such as the type of tree and where it is planted. Still, on average, estimates suggest that one tree will absorb around one tonne of carbon dioxide during its lifetime.

That means, each candidate we place will be responsible for sequestering approximately 100 tonnes of CO2. For both employers and candidates, partnering with Areti is an effective way to positively impact the planet.

We will regularly release updates on the constructive work that is being carried out as a result of our partnership with Ecologi. Keep your eyes peeled on our blog for further information in the coming weeks.

What else are we doing?

Through our partnership with Ecologi, we are confident that we can reliably impact the planet in a positive way. Yet, that is only one aspect of our efforts towards creating a better, more sustainable world.

So, what else are we doing to make a difference?

The 6% pledge

Much of the environmental work completed today is for the benefit of future generations, but we are equally concerned with helping people in need today.

We are committing 6% of our annual profit to be distributed among a variety of community and charity projects. The scope and nature of these projects will vary going forward, and we’ll deliver more information on what we’re contributing towards in the future.

Volunteer days

While financial donations towards community and charity projects are crucial, it’s worth remembering that these schemes also rely on volunteers. There are countless different causes that you might want to volunteer for, but finding the time to make it happen can be challenging.

To ensure that all of our team members can commit time to causes that they care about, we offer each of them 5 fully paid volunteering days every year. This gives them the chance to positively impact the world, working on causes close to them.

Delivering sustainable tech recruitment

Areti is a business that values people and the planet over profit. We believe that we can be a force for change, working with candidates and organisations who also seek a carbon neutral future.

This is why we’ve signed a pledge to be carbon neutral by 2025. That is well in advance of the UK government’s pledge, which aims for carbon neutrality by 2050. We anticipate that we will reach our target long before 2025 too. This ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability will not waver in the coming years.

As always, we also welcome collaborations with organisations and enterprises where our values align. We will continue to provide updates and further details regarding our climate commitments in the weeks and months ahead.
